Definition of Solid Dispersion

Definition:

Solid dispersion is a group of solid products consisting of at least two different components, generally a hydrophilic matrix and a hydrophobic drug.

-Matrix can be either crystalline or amorphous
-The drug can be dispersed  molecularly
 -Amorphous particles (clusters)
 -Crystalline particles.
-The molecular arrangement governs the properties of solid dispersion

Solid dispersion are prepared:

  -To improve drug solubility
  -To improve drug stability
-To mask the bitter taste of drug
  -To obtain required release profile
-To dispense liquid or gaseous compounds
