Definition of cross contamination in Pharmaceutical industry


Definition of Cross contamination as per WHO:
Contamination of starting material, intermediates product or finished product with other starting material or product during production.
In simple language we can say the contamination of material used in manufacturing with the finished product. It may be contamination of starting material, raw material or intermediates with finished product.

Example: A, B and C are used in manufacturing D (Finished product). The unwanted addition of A, B, C or any intermediate produced by A, B or C with D is called cross contamination.

Cross contamination is possible due to following reason:
- Improperly performed Operation
- Spillage of material during handling
- Improper housekeeping
- Poor air handling system

Cross contamination can be avoided by proper air handling unit with efficacy, following of SOP and handling of material, skilled man power, proper cleaning of equipment and follow the procedure of cleaning.
